I saw a beautiful piece of art work today that was highly referenced from a photograph from a website that has an extremely shady reputation. It reminded me yet again how many "traditional" medium artist truly disregard the copyrights of Photographers over and over and over again. Photographs on such sites as photobucket, MSN Groups, MySpace (unless Official photographer, model, actesses page), goggles images, yahoo images etc are often stolen images or NOT Free for use. google is scanning websites and has not right to give permission for use as a reference of to be used in a manipulation or derivative work. That is true for the rest of those site.
So yet again I find myself telling ALL Artists if you don't want your art work stolen WHY are YOU Stealing Others Work???
It's simple ASK! If the answer is No Respect it! There are plenty of terrific models and photographers that offer both Free and yes Sometimes paid for Stock work to be used as references and stock for manips and Derivatives without stealing the work of someone that isn't!
Alas I know I talking to a wall since DA policies Allow such Outright Theft and turn a blind eye. But if you are going to sell your work and make a profit off someone elses work the least you can do is ASK!

ok stepping off my podium again..think about it

I just found one of my images used as reference on a tutorial website. I was wondering why I was getting so many pageviews on this particular picture since I posted it almost 7 months ago--here's the site and the tutorial in question [link]

No one asked me if they could use it so I know it was ripped, but at the same time they do give full credit. I hate to take my pics down but I might have to until I can learn to embed copyright info into the pics.

You know, I have been guilty of doing exactly that, ie using photos for refs without asking. Mostly due to finding photos on sites where all possible identifying means have been removed somehow and it just isn't possible to find out where it's come from. These days I tend to avoid unmarked pics and if necessary I'll take my own photos just in case.(for reference for art only, not to use the photo)

Yeah asking really is pretty easy. I've done that a time or two and never been refused yet.

Giving full credit is awesome. Place like photobucket just rip scan photo's from magazines or still from movies post the images without credit to the magazine much less the photographer. That's where I get peeved. They are NOT trying to teach anyone or give a tutorial AND Prints can be bought directly from the site!!! So photobucket is making a profit off someone elses work. Now see why I am angry?

I also know you make on of a kinda items you are not selling mass prints of and I would be willing to be your works look distinctly different from the original photos you referenced. References are to an extent one thing but the image that set me off yesterday was another thing! lol

Sure I do. It's one of the reasons I haven't went over to that site and raised a stink--because it is being used in a tutorial to teach someone something. Still--it would have been nice if they had asked. I knew something was up when I was suddenly getting hundreds of pageviews and no fav's of comments on that pic. I was just about to pull it off DA when someone sent me a note that they had used it in a manip here.

I agree with you about folks like PhotoBucket letting tht go on--they don't care because they are making a profit. the only time they will do anything is if you go in there and make a stink and then they might not do anything.

Anytime anyone posts a pic on the internet they run the risk of having it stolen--it's just a fact of life. there are ways, if you're computer savvy enough to protect your images and do it without spoiling the image.

I think you misunderstood me I was not advocating what they did just because they give you credit just saying Understand why you haven't demanded they yank it. :)

yeah I know I had to do that with one of my images!

As to the computer savvy enough because EVERY Image you view on your computer is saved temporarily to the computer no computer savvy person can 100% prevent others from keeping and saving and using that image. Which is why I reduce the size of my images and reduce the size images of other artists on my website so even if they save them if they try to enlarge for printing it will be less "pretty" a print than if they buy a print from the artist! Which is the goal of my website ... get people to go to the artists sites and buy prints from them!
